Between November 28th and December 2, 2016, AFTSD had the pleasure and opportunity to assist in organizing the African Trade Week 2016 (ATW2016) hosted by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Abba.

The forum brought together a range of stakeholders comprising ministers, government officials, Regional Economic Communities (REC’s), parliamentarians, representatives from the private sector, civil society, academia and the media. ATW2016 had as an expressed objective to foster a comprehensive and inclusive policy dialogue on the trade segments of the African Union Agenda 2063 with a focus on the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA).

The event took place over the span of a week and consisted of the Africa Trade Forum (ATF) running from November 26 to 30, the African Ministers of Trade running from November 29 and 30th and the second African Trade Facilitation Forum (ATFF) held on December 1st to December 2nd, 2016.

On November 30th, 2016 AFTSD in collaboration with UNECA had the opportunity to host a series of 5 sessions analyzing the research and training needs required to support the negotiation and implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) as well as raise awareness of the trade liberalization and economic integration agenda.  Junior and senior researchers, policy analysts, graduate students, practitioners, civil society and university professors attended the session.
